Sweetwater Mountains Resurvey

July 25 – July 31, 2023

This is a week of scientific survey work, attendees are volunteer botanists, students, research scientists or previous GLORIA workshop attendees. If you have high altitude experience, are a reasonably competent botanist, are familiar with GLORIA-style surveys, we would love to have you!

Camping

Basecamp for the Sweetwater target region peaks will be at the abandoned mining camp of Belfort which is accessed via NV SR 338. A 4WD vehicle will be required for the last 2 miles of the access to our basecamp. Shuttling to the basecamp is likely, and will be arranged as we know more about current road conditions. All meals and personal camping gear will need to be provided by the participant however impromptu pot-lucks are likely. If you are short of a piece of equipment, please email and I am sure that we can find something for you.

There is no reliable water at camp, although there is a spring some walk from camp and reliable water en route to some of our sites. Bring plenty of water and containers that you can fill as we go.

Price

GLORIA Great Basin has a number of costs associated with running these field surveys including survey gear, travel costs, and paying our Field Coordinator. To help defray those costs, we ask for a tax-deductible recommended donation of $20 per person per night for the Sweetwater Mountains survey. Of course, if you are able to donate more to help support students and those who cannot donate, please do! As always, we are very grateful for your generosity and support, year after year. If you are able to make a donation, head over to the donate tab of the website.

Map and Directions

From Bridgeport, CA: Travel northeast on HWY 128 toward Bridgeport Reservoir. Pass the reservoir, after 15 miles the road becomes 338-Sweetwater Road and bends northwest (left). From this bend, it is ~3 miles to Achitson Road. Left on Achitson (dirt road), passing along the south side of the Sweetwater Ranch houses. Continue 1 mile west to a gate @ 38.459678, -119.194751, 6530'. Open/close gate and immediately turn left (south) and proceed south along the fence line 1.1 mi over a cattle guard and then to a junction @ 38.44473, -119.19067. The road straight ahead (south) is signed FR 147. Do not take that, rather turn right (west) on unsigned NF-198/Old Stage Rd. Note that just before this junction is a turn around area and another small track leading west—don’t take that. Continue on NF-198 to a nice campsite in the pines at 38.42357, -119.22040, 7607’. Note that some side roads are marked "198A" or otherwise -- stay on 198. Take a right turn and drive up another 3 miles to 38.41269, -119.25497, 9535', including some steep stuff and some switchbacks at the end. Subarus have made it to this point, best in something similar or in a truck. High clearance, 4WD vehicles will continue 0.6 miles up to camp at Belfort 38.418540, -119.265128.
